How to Stick to Resolutions

by Michelle Sadowitz

It’s 2019!! Everyone has probably come up with their New Year’s Resolution by now. That’s like the thing to do right? Don't get me wrong - it’s a good thing to do. It’s good to set goals for yourself and decided that you will intentionally work on something or try to accomplish something in the next year. Some of you may have goals to eat healthier, lose weight, exercise more, or give your body more sleep, and those are all great things. But I am going to just throw this out there: it will be rough. It’s not going to be a piece of cake and most likely there will be times when you mess up.

That’s okay - we are not perfect! But what will you do after you make a mistake, when you slack off a little bit? It’s easy to say, “Well, I overate on Monday. I messed up my week, so I’ll just wait until next Monday to start over.”  “I already ate one cookie so might as well eat another, I will eat better tomorrow.”

You see, we have a tendency to go easy on ourselves and to push off making corrections.  Why don’t we deal with things right then and there? We just get stuck in this pattern of making a resolution, doing something that goes against what our resolution was, getting discouraged or not taking it seriously and then just waiting until the next year to make another resolution.

Are your goals important to you? If so, then act like it. You might slack off at times and you may not be able to stick to clean eating 100% but it’s all about acknowledging that, making the corrections, getting refocused on your goals, and moving forward.  When you fall down, don’t stay down - get up!! Get up, move forward, and tackle your goals this year!
