The Four Steps of Goal Setting

by Laura Decker

One of the things I have grown to appreciate are the life stories from others. Both stories of positive life change and challenging disappointments are revealed through conversation. Many of these stories spur on motivation to create chapters in their lives to be different or to change the trajectory of where they are headed.

I am encouraged by those who want to be in a better place by making different choices.

Creating goals are often ways we try to focus on a specific area where we want change to happen. Setting a goal can be pretty easy and something we all do. Meeting and achieving them can be a different story. Sure, we have great intentions and are full of motivation, but when the rubber meets the road, sometimes the roadblocks can stop us in our tracks.

Here are just a few things to consider to help spur you on to reach your goals:

Think big
Think about the person you want to be in the future. Ask yourself about the choices you are making and how they will help you to become what you are aiming for. Whether it is to live a healthier lifestyle, to be successful, or to be known as a selfless person, keep the focus on the bigger picture.

Think small
If you are trying to reach a certain destination, you have to move to get there. Each step, or choice you make, will ultimately take you somewhere. Make each moment count. Small and consistent changes made over time will have a lasting impact!

Think outwardly
There are too many times we try to go about things on our own. Life is not a one seated ride! Grab a copilot and ask for directions. Have a friend spur you on to make better choices and help you along the way.

Think inwardly
Give yourself some grace if you step off the path. Take a moment to regroup and focus on starting where you are at. Try not to be too hard on yourself and move on.

There’s a treasure waiting to be told that exists in everyone. These treasures accumulate from a lifetime of experiences. Ups and downs, highs and lows can’t help but create a setting for a beautiful legacy. How will you write your story?
