Cardio Equipment

Are you considering buying a piece of cardio equipment for your home with the goal of losing weight?

Cardio equipment like treadmills, spin bikes, or ellipticals are all very popular because they are easy to use. When you hop on a piece of cardio equipment you are doing a repetitive motion that requires little thought or skill and gives you a good sweat. If your goal is sustainable weight loss or changing the way your body looks, however, cardio equipment is not the answer.

When you do sustained cardio, you are working your heart and lungs which has benefits and you may lose weight if you have some weight to lose but eventually you will plateau. Your body will ultimately adjust to this exercise and you will need to do something different to lose fat and see continuous gains in stability, endurance, and strength. You can get in a good workout at home but training at home is a different story. 

If your goal this year is to lose body fat and get shapely muscles, your first step will be meeting with a professional to learn what you’re doing so you don’t get hurt. Working with a personal trainer is well worth the initial investment and will give you the skills that you need to maintain activity for the rest of your life. After hiring a trainer, here is your game plan for the rest of the year:

  • Lift weights that are heavy for you. This may mean starting with bodyweight exercises, then advancing to dumbbells, and eventually moving to barbells and kettlebells. I barely do more than 8 reps at a time
  • Stick with your program for at least 6-8 weeks. You need to stick with what you have set out to do for at least 6-8 weeks to see strength gains. This doesn’t mean your program has to be boring! Your movements can be varied as long as you are adhering to your rep range and general goal.
  • Adjust & Progress. After finishing a program, it is always smart to reevaluate your goals before setting out to accomplish something else. Do you want to train for a marathon? Do you want to grow your muscles? Do you want to gain strength for a competition? Great!
