Should Women Build Muscle?

by Libby

It can be harder for women to build muscle than men. Does this mean you shouldn't put in the effort? Absolutely not! If you are thinking about giving up on strength training because it doesn't burn as many calories as running or you aren't seeing physical results as quickly as you'd like...think again.

Strength training is about more than just looking good (although it is helpful for that as well). Consistently strength training makes everyday life easier by making you stronger! While you are busy building strong muscles, you are also reducing your risk for injury. This will come in handy later in life to prevent against osteoporosis, joint damage, and falls. Strength training helps to keep women independent as we age through combating age related muscle loss.

If you like to eat (a lot) then keep on strength training! We need more fuel to build bigger and stronger muscles. While you can't spot reduce fat, you can change your physique by building more muscle in specific areas. Regardless of your age or fitness level, you have every right to be in the free weights section of the gym doing strength training exercises. Start with the basic body weight movements like bridges, squats, lunges, and push ups and progress when you are comfortable and ready. Even better - let a LUX personal trainer create a program designed just for you, your body, and your goals!
